BMW

BMW is ready with the fifth-generation 7-series. The new car will replace what has been the most controversial as well as the most successful 7-series of all time.
An almost new engine line-up stands out in the revisions for the new model expected to hit European showrooms in the second quarter of 2005. With the exception of the top-of-the-range V12 power unit in the BMW 760i, the 7-series features a largely new range of power units. Among the eight-cylinder petrol-engined models, the 750i and 740i will replace the current 745i and 735i.
The BMW 740d will make way for the all-new eight-cylinder 745d. The straight-six diesel power unit of the 730d has been heavily revised while the entry-level petrol —730i — will now come with the straight-six petrol engine featuring a composite magnesium/aluminium crankcase carried over from the BMW 630i. Six-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic will be standard on all models.
The 7 will now get three suspension packages from the factory — standard, Adaptive Drive and Sports. The Adaptive Drive will combine Dynamic Drive with BMW's EDC-C continuously adjustable damper control system. Dynamic Drive almost eliminates body sway in bends and improves the car's steering behaviour through the use of fully variable anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles. EDC-C adjusts damper characteristics to changing road, load and driving conditions. The Sports package combines the sports set-up with Dynamic Drive for a sporting driving experience for the genuine enthusiast. Aluminium suspension will also be standard. External refinements are subtle. Apart from the new powerdome in the engine hood, the kidney grille, headlights and the front air dam have all been discreetly revised. The rear gets clearer contours, a new chrome trim strip, modified taillights and the re-designed rear air dam. The iDrive control concept, introduced by BMW in 2001, has also been made more user-friendly.
